Build a career community, attach a career occupation to a program, publish Compass, and confirm a student can find that program.

Getting Started with Pathways

Pathways adds career exploration on top of your catalog: career communities that group related programs, labor-market data attached to those programs, and Compass, a three-question guided finder students use to land on programs that actually exist at your college. In this tutorial you’ll turn one existing program into a career community, attach a career occupation to it, publish the Compass page, and confirm a student can walk through Compass and see that program come back as a result.

What you’ll achieve

  • A career community with a description, color, and icon.
  • A program from your catalog assigned to that community.
  • A career occupation (SOC code) attached to the program, with real wage data pulled in.
  • The Compass page live on your site.
  • A completed walk through Compass that returns your program.

Prerequisites

  • A Catalog Editor account (or WordPress Administrator), signed in to the Kenii dashboard.
  • At least one published program with at least one published credential that has its Credits set. If you don’t have this yet, complete Kenii Catalog’s Getting Started tutorial first; it builds exactly this.

Step 1: Open Pathways

In the Kenii sidebar, open the galaxy menu and choose Pathways. You’ll land on Overview, showing a Programs → Communities → Compass breadcrumb and stat cards for Pathway Completeness, Career Communities, and Needs Attention.

Step 2: Turn your program area into a career community

Career communities and Catalog’s program areas are the same taxonomy, so the program area you already assigned your program to (in Catalog’s Getting Started tutorial) already shows up here, waiting for display details.

  1. In the Pathways sidebar, click Career Communities.
  2. Find the program area from your program (for example, Public Safety) in the list and click it.
  3. Under Description, write a sentence a student would read, for example: “Train for careers protecting people and property.”
  4. Under Color, enter a hex color, for example #7C3AED.
  5. Click Save Changes.

The community now shows your description and color, and its Programs count matches the programs you’ve assigned to that area in Catalog.

Step 3: Open your program’s pathway data

  1. In the Pathways sidebar, click Pathway Programs.
  2. Click your program in the list.

You land in the Program Pathway editor, on the Overview tab. Notice this editor doesn’t touch your program’s title or description, those stay in Catalog. It only adds pathway-specific data: career occupations, transfer articulations, and CCP pathways.

Step 4: Attach a career occupation

  1. Click the Career Data tab.
  2. In the field labeled e.g., 15-1212, type a Standard Occupational Classification (SOC) code for an occupation your program leads to. If you don’t know one, search occupation titles at onetonline.org to find its code.
  3. Click Add SOC Code.

The code appears in a career card. Kenii fetches wage and employment data for it in the background, so the card fills in with a job title, an annual mean wage, and an employment figure within a few seconds.

Step 5: Publish the Compass page

  1. In the Pathways sidebar, click Pathways Settings.
  2. Click the Templates section.
  3. Turn on Enable Templates. A Your Pages list appears, showing Career Communities, Find Your Path (this is Compass), and your dual enrollment pathways page.
  4. Click the Compass section.
  5. Turn on Enable Compass.
  6. Click Save Settings.

Kenii creates and publishes all three pages the moment you save. Open the Find Your Path page from Your Pages (or visit /compass/ on your site) in a new tab to see it live.

Step 6: Walk through Compass as a student would

  1. Click the Compass item in the Pathways sidebar. This opens a preview that runs the same search a student would use, without leaving the dashboard.
  2. Under What are you interested in?, click the career community you set up in Step 2.
  3. Under What’s your goal?, click the credential type that matches the credential on your program (for example, Certificate).
  4. Under What’s your pace?, click Full-time.

The results screen loads and shows your program: its title, its credential, and the career occupation you attached in Step 4, with the wage data Kenii fetched.

You’ve now taken a program from your catalog, grouped it into a career community, attached labor-market data to it, and confirmed a student can find it through Compass. From here:
